Richard Lee Crowell was born in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota on November 16th, 1944. He was the youngest of Kenneth and Alma Crowell’s three sons. He went to school in Detroit Lakes and attended MSUM. He was a corpsman in the U.S. Navy. He married Judy Malstrom on October 14th, 1972. They have one daughter, Lisa, and son-in-law, Nic Kragh.
Dick worked for Shade Tree Service and Wright Tree Service, trimming trees for NSP and Excel Energy. He operated a bucket truck to reach extremely tall branches. His daughter remembers fondly how he gave her a ride in the bucket truck when she was a youngster and proclaimed, “We’re so high, I can see the mall from our house!” His wife, however, does not enjoy heights and had a different exclamation upon being raised in the bucket and her memory of that day is not so fond.
Dick had a fierce sense of humor and didn’t take life too seriously. He loved golf, reading, gardening, and his family; not necessarily in that order. He hated politicians, braggarts, and bananas; not necessarily in that order.
During his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and one or two gambling trips a year to Vegas…or maybe three or four. He retired from tree trimming in 2005 and his new job became golfing. He took fashion cues from no one; often combining Hawaiian shirts with…well, anything. And he never cared if his belt matched his shoes.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Bob, and survived by his wife, daughter and brother, Kenneth Jr (Lorna), sisters-in-law, Kathy Nichols and Gwen Young, nieces and nephews, and his golf buddies both in Fargo-Moorhead and Arizona.
