Richard LeRoy “Dick” Gunderson, 85, of Moorhead, MN, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2019, in his home surrounded by his loving family.
Dick was born on March 12, 1934, to Erwin and Irene (Schultek) Gunderson in Superior, WI. He was confirmed at Rindahl Lutheran Church in Underwood, MN, and graduated from Battle Lake Public School, Battle Lake, MN.
Dick enlisted into the Air Force in Fergus Falls, MN, in 1952. He completed his basic training at Parks Air Force Base in California and attended Air Frame Repair School for three months in Amarillo, TX. He was at Mt. Clemens Air Force Base in Detroit, MI for two weeks before shipping out to Tripoli, Libya, Africa, in 1953. There he served until 1955 before being sent to Chanute Air Force Base, Rantoul, IL, until his release from active duty on October 16, 1956. He remained in the Inactive Reserves until being discharged in 1960.
Dick attended North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND, where he graduated with an Associates Degree. He was united in marriage to Joyce Peterson on November 10, 1956, in Battle Lake, MN. He worked at various electrical companies around the area including Minneapolis Honeywell, he was a Journeyman Electrician with Fritz Electric for 40 years. He retired in 1996. Dick and Joyce enjoyed their winters in Long Beach, CA after retirement.
Dick served as Boy Scout Master Troop 627, in Moorhead for 15 years. He was a member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and a Union Member Local 1426. He enjoyed playing and watching baseball games and was an avid Yankees fan. He loved to hunt, camp, travel, garden, and spend time with his family. He was a kind and generous man and was quite the conversationalist.
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Joyce; sons, Steven (Connie) Gunderson, Fargo, ND, and Dean Gunderson, Maple Grove, MN; grandchildren, Ashley Gunderson, Minneapolis, MN, and Adam Gunderson, Omaha, NE; half-brother, Rick (Linda) Raunio; half-sister, Joyce Collins; and many other loving relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Erwin and Irene; and brothers, Russell and Ralph.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 15, 2019, at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead, MN, at 2:00 P.M. with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Final resting place will be at 1st Lutheran Church Cemetery, Battle Lake, MN, in the spring.
