Richard M. Melbye , 90, Ulen, MN formerly of Hitterdal, MN died on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at the Viking Manor Nursing Home, Ulen, MN.Richard M. Melbye was born on December 3, 1914 to Anton and Jenny Oss Melbye, in Goose Prairie Township, near Hitterdal, MN. He married Pearl Eide on June 9, 1940 at Salem Lutheran Church, Hitterdal. He owned and operated the Melbye Store, Hitterdal, MN, with his parents and later was drafted into the U.S. Army. Richard owned and operated a lumber company with Peder Winden and they built the Dollar Homes through an operation in Hitterdal. He also owned and operated the Ho-Hum Motel in Hawley, MN and Dilworth, MN. In 1963 he became postmaster in Hitterdal, retiring in 1980. He moved to Viking Manor in June of 2004, and later Pearl and Richard moved together into the Northern Lights Assisted Living, Ulen, MN in October of 2004. Richard was a longtime member of the Volunteer Fire Dept, the Salem Lutheran Church, and the American Legion, Hitterdal, MN.Richard was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harvey and Floyd; and sister, Alpha Winden.He is survived by his wife, Pearl of Ulen, MN; sons, Michael Lois, St Louis Park, MN, Marshall Diane, Dickinson, ND; sister, Alaila Hansen, Moorhead, MN; four grandchildren, Eric Susan Melbye, Matthew Jennifer Melbye, Jessica Brian Melbye Hawley, Kristin Melbye; four great-grandchildren, Emily, Abigail, Peter Melbye, Paige Hawley.
