Robert “Rob” Dean Barr, 67, passed away on March 18th.
Born on March 8th, 1957 in Detroit Lakes, Mn to Dean and Jessie (Struble) Barr, he was the oldest of 3 children. He graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1975. He continued his education at NDSU for two years and then in 1991 attended Penn State, where he graduated from their
Turfgrass Management program, one of the top in the nation.
During his time at NDSU he met Holly Warren (Knutt), they wed in August of 1983 and from this union had two sons, Josh and Drew.
Rob had many talents and held various jobs that included hard work and creating things with his hands. He took the most pride in maintaining the beauty and tradition of golf courses, and a love for the game that he would go on to share with his sons. He interned at the Congressional Country Club where he worked with Jack Nicklaus and his associates; and went on to be Superintendent of St. Cloud Country Club, and Regional Superintendent for ValleyCrest Golf Maintenance where he oversaw the care of several courses. Before retiring, he worked for the city of Woodbury, Minnesota as their Turfgrass Management Specialist.
Rob was a man of hobbies and passions, with his family being his favorite people to share them with. Growing up on Pelican Lake there were many days filled with boating and skiing (barefoot), and as a parent he found great joy in being able to share his love for the lake with his sons. If you knew Rob, you knew that him and cars went hand in hand, specifically Datsun’s. Along with his love for classic cars, he had a fine eye for the rare and collectable. He was always on the hunt for the next once-in-a-lifetime find and the story behind it.
Rob is survived by his sons, Josh Barr and Drew (Aly) Barr; grandchildren, Logan, Everly, Oaklyn, Maverick, and Kennedy; sister, Sue (Mark) Waltz; brother, Dave (Jenni) Barr; and his nephews Matt, Toby, Tyler, and Michael, along with numerous other family and friends who will miss him deeply.
There will be a memorial to celebrate the life of Rob planned for a later date.
