Robert Gene Burnside, 70, of Hawley, Minnesota, died Monday, November 22, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, North Dakota.Robert was born May 6, 1934 in Hawley, Minnesota to Robert and Julia Mortenson Burnside. He grew up and attended school in Hawley. Following his schooling he worked for several farms in the area. He worked for Industrial Builders for 2 years, then moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he worked for Denton Construction Company for 2 years, working on the beginning phases of the Eisenhower Freeway system. He returned to Hawley, and worked for FM Asphalt until his retirement in 1978. Robert was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper. He also built an exact replica of the Viking ship at the Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center.He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, John, Gordon, Harvey, Roy, and Lloyal, and one son, Robert, Jr.He is survived by one son, Audie LaVonne Burnside, Hawley, MN; one sister, Ione Harley Erickson, Fargo, ND; one grandchild, Nathan, and three step grandchildren, Joe, Jessica and Jordan; several nieces and nephews.
