Rodney G. Lucier

November 6, 1933 — February 21, 2016

Rodney G. Lucier passed away peacefully on February 21, 2016.

Rodney George Lucier was born on November 6, 1933, in Wallhala, ND, to George and Albena Longtin Lucier. He grew up in Wallhala and graduated from Wallhala High School. He then attended Broadcasting School. Rodney married Anna Mae Urlaub and they had four daughters together. They later divorced and Rodney married Silvia Matiation and had one step-daughter.

Rodney started his career in radio as a disc jockey with KROX in Crookston, MN, for one year. He then worked in Moorhead, MN, for KVOX as a disc jockey when the rock’n’roll era was in its early stages. Rod was responsible for booking a number of national talents into the area. In 1959 Rod booked Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Richie Valens to perform at the Moorhead Armory. This was the tragic accident when all three were killed when their plane crashed in Iowa en-route to the Fargo airport.
Rod’s biggest passion was sports broadcasting. He served as the sports director of KVOX as well as advertising sales. He was very pleased with the success of the Benchwarmers Club Show which was broadcast every week. Rod talked with a number of athletes and coaches to keep up to date on what was going on in sports. He broadcasted baseball, football, and basketball for the Moorhead Spuds and MUSM Dragons along with many other events in the area.

Over the years, Rod has been very active in community affairs. He had been on numerous Chamber of Commerce committees, served as 4th Ward of Alderman for the City of Moorhead, was President of the Moorhead Jaycees and the Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus.

After Rod retired, he spent much of his time following the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. Every Sunday he enjoyed watching the games with his family.

Rod is survived by three daughters, Robyn Nugent Mike Felton; Randi Smith Mike Moorhead and Roni Parker Dan Arlington, WA. He is also survived by his brother Terry Lucier, Fargo; grandsons, Pat, Ben, Jordan and Casey; granddaughters Leah, Monique, Danielle, Rachel, and Samantha; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, daughter Roxanne and granddaughter Toni.
