Roland Schweigert, age 89, of Moorhead, MN, died on Friday, March 22, 2013, in Golden Living Center, Moorhead, MN, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Roland Schweigert was born on August 22, 1923, to Jacob and Julia Durr Schweigert, near Lehr, ND. He was the fifth child in a family of seven children, having three brothers and three sisters. Roland graduated from Lehr High School in 1941. He moved to Lansing, Michigan, and lived with his sister Ester until April, 1943, when he was drafted into the Army Air Force during WWII. He served in North Africa and Italy until his discharge in November, 1945.
He married Ellatena Hiller on August 29, 1946, in Fargo, ND. In April of 1947, they moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he attended railroad telegraph school. He graduated in November of 1947, and went to work for the Milwaukee Railroad as a station agent. They settled in Zeeland, ND, and lived there for nine years.
In May of 1963, Roland left the railroad and moved to Moorhead, MN, where he worked for Fairmont Foods until the plant closed. He later worked part-time as the caretaker for Riverside Cemetery, until he retired in 1988.
Survivors include his wife, Ellatena; one daughter, Marsha James Emarine, of Moorhead, MN; one grandson, Trevor Kratzke of St. Cloud, MN; two step-grandchildren, Marylynn Robert Dockter and Todd Emarine; two great-granddaughters, Danetta and Katrina Kratzke; and step-great-grandson, Logan Eggiman.
Roland was preceded in death by his parent and all six siblings.
Visitation: One hour before the service.
Funeral: Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.
Interment: Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at 1:00 p.m., in the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan, ND. Tentative
