Sherman J. Payne, 84, of Glyndon, MN, died Wednesday, March 25, 2015 in Fergus Falls Veterans Home, Fergus Falls, MN.
Sherman Joseph Payne was born on March 3, 1931, in Badger, MN, to Arthur and Mary Flicek Payne. He was very proud that on this date, the Star-Spangled Banner was named the national anthem by President Woodrow Wilson. Sherman grew up in Fargo, ND, until his family moved to Glyndon, MN, where he graduated from high school.
On February 1, 1952, Sherman married Geraldine “Gerrie” Muhle. He then served in the United States Marine Corps for two years. They returned to the Glyndon area after his service, where Sherman worked for Cook Sign Company. Together they moved to Bismarck, ND, and had four children. Sherman then started Signs of Bismarck with two partners, until his retirement. After 35 years, Gerrie’s father passed away, and then they moved back to Glyndon, where they have resided since.
Sherman enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He also loved to golf and play softball with his church team.
He is survived by his wife, Gerrie, Glyndon, MN; children, Vicki Ron Bickle, Shakopee, MN, Cindy Doug Myers, Lakeville, MN, Steve Amanda Payne, New Prague, MN, Mark Sue Payne, Eden Prairie, MN; six grandchildren, Kris Ron Siven, Benjamin Bickle, Katie Myers, Jessica Myers, Melissa Payne and Chris Payne; two great-grandsons, Jeremy and Aaron Siven; two sisters, Irene Messerschmidt, Moorhead, MN, and Shirley Joe Zimny, Olympia, WA; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Betty Caye; and brothers-in-law, Gene Caye and George Messerschmidt.
Visitation: Tues., March 31, 2015, from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.
Funeral: Wed., April 1, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in Maranatha Free Lutheran Church, Glyndon, MN.
Interment: Riverside Cemetery, Glyndon, MN.
