Sidney H. Snartland

Sidney H. Snartland, 91, Moorhead, MN, died on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, in Sunnyside Care Center, Lake Park, MN.
Sidney was born on July 22, 1924 in Fargo, ND, to Saave and Helene Svenkeson Snartland. He grew up and attended school in Moland Township and graduated from Moorhead High School. He farmed with his parents and then served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Hawaii from 1945 to 1946. Following his service, he returned to Moorhead where he worked for a short time for the telephone company and then began a forty-year career with American Crystal Sugar Company. He served in many roles and at several facilities including Renville, MN, Rocky Ford, CO, Moorhead, MN and Crookston, MN. He was the youngest and first Lineman to be promoted to Assistant Superintendent, the job from which he retired in Crookston, MN, in July of 1986 at the age of 62.
Sidney married Carole Olstad on July 2, 1950 in Hettinger, ND and they made their home in Moorhead. She died on March 8, 1970 and he raised their four children on his own, working hard to keep the family together. He later married Esther Elizabeth Dufault on April 4, 1981 and they made their home in Crookston, MN. She died on June 17, 2010.
Sid was a lifelong tinkerer and handyman who could fix or improve anything. He was always making something and enjoyed woodworking. Early electronics radio and television were a hobby back when everything had tubes.
He enjoyed fishing, the cabin on Maple Lake, and vacationing on Cotton Lake when the kids were young. He also was interested in the old west and enjoyed western movies. Family connections were most important and vacations were spent returning home and visiting family. He was also active in the church, leading Sunday School in Rocky Ford, CO.
Sidney is survived by his children, Nancy Wendell Slate, Westminster, CO, Ron Brenda Snartland, Mesa, AZ, Phill Julie Snartland, St. Cloud, MN, and Gail Curtis Johnson, Moorhead, MN; grandchildren Jeff Renee Slate, Carole Dustin Greenwell, Kristen Steve Jacobson, Jim Snartland, Aaron Tess Johnson, Alexander Crystal Johnson; great-grandchildren, Kaia Greenwell and Evelyn Jacobson; step-children Arnold Karen Dufault, Bernie Gary Mackowick, Cal Dufault, Richard Normandin surviving spouse of Connie; step-grandchildren Dave, Vince and Chad Mackowick, Todd Dufault, Jenna Mackowick, Krista Lippitt and Kim Huot; several step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carole; his second wife Esther Elizabeth; siblings Thorance, Andrew, Gladys, Gerhard; nephew Glenn; step-child Connie, step-grandhildren Geri and Joey and Rae Ann; and step-great-grandchild Cole.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to the Concordia Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund, Serenity Living Center Dilworth, MN, or Sunnyside Care Center.
Funeral: Saturday, June 11, 2016, at 10:00 A.M. in Concordia Lutheran Church, rural Glyndon, MN.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral in the church.
Interment: Concordia Lutheran Church Cemetery, Glyndon, MN.
