Steven W. Malakowsky

Steven W. Malakowsky, 68, of Hawley, Minnesota, died Thursday, July 20, 2017, in his home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Steve was born October 18, 1948 in Moorhead, MN to Walter and Marjorie Miller Malakowsky. He grew up and attended school in Hawley. After graduating high school, he served with the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam. Steve was very dedicated to his country and later served in the North Dakota Air National Guard in Fargo, ND. He was grateful for the many relationships he built over the years. On June 30, 1979, he married Kim Vining. Together they lived in various towns in North Dakota while Steve worked as a Soil Scientist with the ND Soil Conservation Service before moving to Fargo in 1987 and eventually settling in Hawley, MN in 1993. After retiring he enjoyed farming with his cousin, Ross Malakowsky.

Steve loved spending time with family and friends, golfing, fishing, hunting, bowling, and gardening. His love of golf included serving as President of the Hawley Golf Club, working at Osgood and Edgewood golf courses, and building custom clubs. Steve could often be found sharing; from the many vegetables out of his garden to his time mentoring Hawley golf students. He made countless friends over the years with his outgoing personality and sense of humor. He will be greatly missed.

Steve is survived by his wife, Kim Malakowsky; son, Bryan Malakowsky; two daughters, Stephanie Malakowsky and Natalia Zach Stock; granddaughters, Dalice Brand and Taylor Malakowsky; great-granddaughter, Zariah Meyers; and sisters, Jean Iverson, Mary Ellen Maurice Martin; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Marjorie, and sisters, Barbara Crowell and Kathy Nelson.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 27, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m., in Hawley Lutheran Church, Hawley, MN.

Memorial service will be Friday, July 28, at 2:00 p.m., in Hawley Lutheran Church, Hawley, MN.
