Svetlana Hannaher, age 84, passed away on Friday, January 26, 2018 at Envoy of Alexandria, Alexandria, VA.
She was born on August 16, 1933, the older daughter of Slobodan and Jelena Gođevac in Budapest, Hungary. She met William J. Hannaher while they both worked at the U.S. embassy in Belgrade, capital of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. They married on September 3, 1959 in Belgrade, and moved to the United States upon the birth of their first child.
Subsequent to her second child and a move to Fairfax County in Virginia, she was a language instructor at the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. Department of State for two decades, training diplomats and other State Department officials in Serbo-Croatian, retiring in 1994.
She obtained a 28.8k modem on the advice of her children in 1996 and was on the Internet continuously since. She did extensive gardening as well, and photography of her travels.
Svetlana leaves behind her husband William and her sons Constantine and Stephen [and daughter-in-law Janice], all of Northern Virginia, and her sister, Gordana Misirlić, of Belgrade, Serbia. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at Wright Funeral Home in Moorhead, MN. Burial will be on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Prairie Home Cemetery in Moorhead, MN.
