Thomas Everett Mickelson, 85, Hawley, MN, died Tuesday, August 14, 2007, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.Thomas Everett Mickelson was born to Henry and Sarah Lund Mickelson on November 24, 1921. He was baptized December 28, 1921 by the Rev. Erling Tungseth, and was confirmed July 11, 1937 by the Rev. Jonas Helland. He was a life long member of Grong Lutheran Church. He served as trustee and was on the Church Council for many years. At the age of 22, he took full responsibility of the family farm due to the sudden death of his father. Thomas was a very successful farmer and took great pride in his work. He was also known for keeping the homestead surroundings looking like a park.Thomas took wonderful care of our mother during her aging years. When she entered the Detroit Lakes nursing home, there was hardly a day he did not visit her. After retiring from farming, he purchased a cottage on Big Detroit Lake, where he enjoyed spending time during the spring, summer and fall. A great part of the winters were enjoyed in Mission, Texas. He also made travels to Florida, California, Arizona and Mexico. In October 1999, he entered the Hawley Manor Retirement Home. This became his second home and family. He participated in most all of the activities, winning many awards and ribbons. He was also in charge of the fish aquarium, of which he was proud. He enjoyed reading playing cards, doing puzzles, rolling bandages, being with friends and family, and checking on the old homestead. He was a sharp pool player. In his younger years, Tom thoroughly enjoyed attending public auctions. The weekly bible study at the Hawley Manor was a joy to him. Thomas was always very grateful for the wonderful home cooked meals prepared by the kitchen staff at the Manor. He will be missed by family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Stanley Mickelson and Morris Mickelson; and two sisters, Thelma Bergseid and Helen Bergseid.Thomas is survived by two sisters, Mae Schultz, Moorhead, MN, and Lorraine Bergseid, White Bear Lake, MN.
