Thomas W. Kenney, 73, Fergus Falls, MN, died on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 in Sanford Health, Fargo, ND.
Tom was born on October 1, 1943, in San Diego, CA, to William and Lilly Jahnke Kenney. He grew up in Moorhead, MN, attending St. Joseph’s grade school and graduating from Moorhead High School in 1961. He played on the Moorhead High Golf team and enjoyed the sport throughout his life until he was physically unable to play. Tom went on to attend and graduate from Moorhead State University.
Tom served in the U.S. Army, and following his discharge in 1971 he returned to Fargo-Moorhead to join his family in the operation of the Silver Moon and the Gardner Hotel. When those were sold in 1974, he moved to Fergus Falls, MN, where he worked in the food and beverage business in various locations. Later he sold insurance as an independent agent.
He enjoyed many summers at the Kenney cabin on Lake Melissa throughout his life. He was an avid Oakland Raiders fan and New York Yankees fan, living and dying with those teams. Tom also had a standing card game on Wednesday’s in Fergus Falls for many years.
He is survived by his son, Grant W. Kenney, Winthrop, MN; brother Patrick Sue Kenney, Detroit Lakes, MN; nephew Michael Cindy Kenney, Phoenix, AZ; uncle Don Sherman, San Diego, CA; and many, many cousins.
Tom was preceded in death by his father, mother and younger sister Beth Ann.
There will be a celebration of Tom’s life on Monday, November 21, 2016, from 1:30 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. in the V.F.W. Club in Fergus Falls.
A private interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead.
