Verlayne A. Swenson, 87, of Hitterdal, MN, died Saturday, June 22, 2013, in Viking Manor Nursing Home, Ulen, MN.
Verlayne Alethe Eide was born on November 25, 1925 in Hitterdal, MN, to Emil and Olga Melbye Eide. She grew up in Hitterdal and graduated from Hitterdal High School. Verlayne married George Swenson on July 5, 1952 at Salem Lutheran Church, Hitterdal. She worked at many businesses in Hitterdal over the years, including various grocery stores, Jigg’s Café and Harry Gerner’s Creamery where she candled eggs.
Verlayne was active in her church circle, ladies aide, American Legion Auxiliary and the Hitterdal Senior Citizen Center. In her younger years, she enjoyed sports and playing basketball and baseball. She also loved socializing, dancing, traveling, taking care of the neighborhood children and attending local school sports. George died in 1995 and Verlayne continued to live at home until 2008, when she moved to Viking Manor.
She is survived by her sister, Adrienne Vergil Luthi, Hitterdal, MN; sisters-in-law, Lotte Eide, Blaine, MN, Anita Haller, St. Cloud, MN, Jeanette Steen, Portland, OR and Darlene Earl Uthus, Tacoma, WA.
Verlayne was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Wallace Oscar, Viola, Opal, and Wallace J. Eide, and Evelyn Anderson.
