Virgil G. Olson, 77, of Hawley, MN, passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at home under the care of family and Hospice of the Red River Valley. Virgil was born in Hawley on December 2, 1938, to Edwin and Grace Berg Olson. He grew up on the family farm near Lee Lake where they worked with horses and milked cows. He attended Hawley High School and later served in the U.S. Army from 1961 – 1963 and continued with the Army reserves until 1967. After returning to the area, he married Norma Peterson on February 14, 1964. Together they made their home in near Hawley. Virgil began his career with Clay County and continued until retiring in 1997. Following retirement, he enjoyed staying busy and worked various part-time jobs. He loved trimming horses and visiting with others. He also enjoyed, working with 4-H, Hawley Golden Riders and would always lend a hand to anyone. He was a genuine person and will be dearly missed.
Virgil is survived by his wife, Norma; son, Ross Olson of Hawley, MN; daughter, Tiffany Eric Brown of Pelican Rapids, MN; granddaughters, Hadley and Lainey Brown; and brother, Roger Nancy Olson of Elk River, MN; two nieces, Sheri Lorne Wittnebel and their sons, Derek and Dylan; Sandi Olson and her daughter, Samantha; and two nephews, Chad Kari Peterson and Rod Peterson and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials will be given to Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Memorial Gathering: Monday, June 13, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., with prayer service at 7 p.m., in Wright Funeral Home, Hawley, MN.
Memorial Service: Tuesday, June 14, at 11:00 a.m., in Solem Lutheran Church, Hawley, MN.
