Virgil Hans Rodenborg, 92, of Hawley, MN, passed away March 14, 2019, at home.
Virgil was born on August 28, 1926, to Johannes Hans and Martha (Tellinghuisen) Rodenborg. He was born in a farm house near Manchester, Kingsburg County, South Dakota, near “The Little House on the Prairie”. During the drought, the family moved to a farm near Lake Benton, MN, where he attended his first year of school. In 1935, they moved to rural Borup, MN, where Virgil finished his schooling.
On June 12, 1948, Virgil married Mary Irene Ueland at Halstad, MN. They farmed in the Borup/Felton area until purchasing a farm in 1950 north of Hawley, MN, in Cromwell Township sec 16. They raised grain and livestock.
Virgil was an active member of the Hawley United Methodist Church. He served on the Cromwell town board as chairman, worked to develop the Hawley area rural fire department and buy the first rural fire truck. He assisted in setting up the Hawley Area United Fund. In 1998, Virgil and Mary Irene moved into Hawley, and Virgil became the custodian of the Hawley United Methodist Church.
Virgil enjoyed visiting with family and friends. He loved old time gospel and country music. Virgil enjoyed working with his wife in the garden and was proud of sharing his special vegetables. Mary Irene and Virgil enjoyed traveling. The highlights of their trips were salmon fishing in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of WA, going to the top of the Space Needle in Seattle, seeing the sights in Las Vegas, NV, visiting the Grand Canyon and Arches National Park, UT, The circle tour of Lake Superior, the arch in St. Louis, MO. Eastern KY and the Pigeon Forge, TN.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, and son, David Virgil Rodenborg.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Irene; daughter, Ireta (Robert) Larson of Bemidji, MN; granddaughters, Carla Riley, Heather (Amanda) Rodenborg, Haley (Dustin) Skeide; and 3 great-granddaughters, Calla (Timothy) Clemenson, Sierra Riley and Hanna Skeide.

Visitation will be Monday, March 18, From 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., at Hawley United Methodist Church, Hawley, MN.
Funeral will be Monday, March 18, at 11:00 a.m., at Hawley United Methodist Church, Hawley, MN.
Interment will be at Hawley Cemetery at a later date.
