Walter H. Olson

March 6, 1932 — March 21, 2020

Walter H. Olson, 88, of Dilworth, MN, died Saturday, March 21, 2020 at Sanford Health Medical Center in Fargo due to complications from infection.  He was surrounded by his family in his final days.

Walter Howard Olson (Walt) was born March 6, 1932 in Hitterdal, MN, to Ray and Gertrude (Grupp) Olson.  Walt grew up in Hitterdal, MN.  As a young man he moved to Washington state where he worked in the shipyards.  He was very proud to be a part of building the USS Lexington, and many years later he was able to revisit the ship at its final dock in Corpus Christi Bay.  Walt served in the Army during the Korean War and was a life-long member of the American Legion and VFW.  After the war he returned to the Fargo/Moorhead area.  Walt was united in marriage to Arlene Westphal on August 6, 1960 and they had two daughters.  Walt worked as a truck driver most of his life and was a member of the Teamsters Union.  Later on in life Walt lost his vision to macular degeneration but made the best of a hard situation.  He enjoyed drinking coffee with his buddies, visiting with friends and family, and listening to books on tape.  His grandchildren always held a special place in his heart.  He enjoyed visiting them and talking with them on the phone.

Walter is survived by his daughters Paula (Todd) Radel, Bozeman, MT and Caryel (Kevin) Kruger, Normanna, TX; grandchildren, Jenna (Jeff) Anderson, Jeremy (Amber) Lang, Lane Kruger and Hana Kruger; great grandchildren, Hazel Marie Lang and Finley Graham Anderson and best friend Pedro Rodriguez. He is also survived by his sisters Linda Rippy and MaryLou Anderson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Arlene, his parents and siblings Marion, Caryel Rubye, Glenn and Richard.

Services will be held at a later date due to the events occurring at this time.
