Walter Rieckman was born on May 20, 1937 in Morris, MN, to Richard and Helen Thomas Rieckman. He passed away in the early morning hours of October 22, 2014 with his family near him and under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Walter was baptized and confirmed in the Peace Lutheran Church in Morris.
Walter attended Morris High School and later entered the Navy. He was united in marriage to Marlys Miller on November 29, 1957. They were blessed with three children, Christine, Charlene and Michael. In 1960 he joined the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local 126/11. He was a lifetime member working as a high pressure steamfitter and welder. He worked in many locations as well as in Hawaii.
He was a member of the Masons and past Master of Shell Lodge #184 in Park Rapids, MN. He was also a member of the Zuhrah Shrine for many years. One of his passions in life was being a licensed private pilot. Walter also had a great love of the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping and especially enjoyed sharing his knowledge of them with his children and grandchildren.
Walter is survived by his wife, Marlys; three children, Chris Rieckman of Fargo, ND, Chari Jerry Dahl of Merrifield, MN, and Michael Kathy Rieckman of Moorhead, MN. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Matthew Mayra Rieckman, Lisa Stengel, Andrew Stengel and Samantha Rieckman.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Marie Jacobson and brothers, Edward and Paul.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 25, at 1:00 p.m., in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.
Memorials are preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley and the American Cancer Society.
