Wendell E. Westfield, age 92, of Moorhead, MN, died October 18, 2013, in Lake Ridge Health Care Center, Roseville, MN.
Wendell Eugene was born on February 8, 1921 in Canby, MN, to Alfred and Sylvia Buchanan Westfield. He grew up on a farm North of Canby, MN, and graduated from Madison High School. After graduating, Wendell attended sheet metal school in Norman OK, built planes in Buffalo NY, then served in the United States Navy. Upon returning from his service, he returned to farming on the family farm. On October 20, 1949, he married Ruth Medhaug in Veblen, SD. After marriage, they farmed in the Canby area until they moved to Moorhead in 1959, where they have resided since. Throughout life, Wendell enjoyed the outdoors whether it was farming, gardening, or outdoor sports. Wendell was also known as the local handyman, by family, friends and neighbors.
He is survived by his daughter, Carmen Kenneth Bengtsson of Karlstad, Sweden; sons, Brian Trudy of Summerville, OR, Lee Candyce of Walker, MN and Aaron Barbara of St. Paul, MN; sisters, Beverly Dennis Frederickson, Porter, MN and Marcella Oellien, Canby, MN; brother, Merlin Westfield, Pipestone, MN; nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Beulah Friis and Marilyn Frederickson; brothers, Russell, Lowell and Gerald Westfield.
Funeral Service: Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Canby, MN.
Visitation will be one hour before the service.
Interment: Canby City Cemetery, Canby, MN.
