Wilfred “Pete” Bachmeier, 84, of Moorhead, MN passed away peacefully Saturday, June 1, 2019 at home while watching baseball on TV.
Wilfred Herbert Bachmeier was born on December 11, 1934, the son of Anton and Hilda (Opshal) Bachmeier in Esmond, ND. In his youth, Pete moved with his family to Grand Forks, ND where he grew up and attended Grand Forks schools. After graduating from Central High School in 1953, Pete attended the University of North Dakota, graduating in 1959. In 1959 Pete entered the US Army. He was in the US Army reserves until his honorable discharge in 1965. During the 60’s and 70’s Pete was active on Grand Forks fastpitch softball teams that competed nationally and in Canada, including the Pan-American games in 1967. Pete’s teams were the GF Merchants, Grain Belt, Matt’s Tavern and Knights of Columbus. Pete retired from fastpitch softball in 1976. In 1978 Pete was inducted into the North Dakota Fastpitch Softball Hall of Fame.
Following his fastpitch softball career, Pete officiated high school football, hockey and college hockey.
Pete worked as a banking officer, vice president and accountant in downtown Grand Forks for decades until retiring in 1989. Pete enjoyed woodworking, golfing, fishing and spending time at his lake cabin near Cass Lake, MN. Pete also lived in Chandler, AZ during the winter months.
Pete was a wonderful supportive father and grandfather and loved his family dearly. His true joy in later years was watching his grandchildren compete in sports.
Pete is survived by his daughter, Amy (Chad) Fullmer; grandchildren, Caleigh-Ann and Gavin Fullmer, Moorhead, MN; and brothers, Tony and Jim ‘Rip’ Bachmeier. He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Edward, Hank, Richard, Victor, Kay, Jean, Lorraine; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Pete’s life will be held on Friday, June 7th 6-8pm at Calvary Lutheran Church. 1405 S. 9th St., Grand Forks.
The family has requested no flowers or memorials.
