Helen Pfeifer

November 9, 1930 — September 9, 2020

Helen Elizabeth (Wehage) Pfeifer passed away at her home with her children by her side on September 9, 2020.  She had been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) on March 23, 2020.  Helen was born to Pauline (Gessner) and Herman Wehage in Marysburg, Saskatchewan, Canada on November 9, 1930.  When Helen was 1, the family, with older sister, Dorothy, immigrated to the United States and settled in Fargo.  Two more children were born in the United States, Richard and Robert.

Helen graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1948, and went on to nurses training at the Sisters of St. Joseph School of Nursing at St. John’s Hospital, graduating as an RN in 1951.  Helen worked shortly as a nurse at St. John’s Hospital and then for the City of Fargo as a public health nurse until 1958.

On September 25, 1951 Helen married Lawrence Pfeifer at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Fargo.  They made their home in Moorhead and had two children David Lawrence and Marilyn Ann.  In 1958 Larry started his business, Pfeifer Decorating, and together they successfully managed that business for 25 years.  They retired in the summer of 1982, moved to their lake home on Big Cormorant Lake, and lived there for 31 happy years until their eventual return to Moorhead in 2013.

Helen was an avid walker and voracious reader.  She was known for her crocheted baby afghans and many hand-made quilts.  Helen enjoyed watching baseball, football and hockey, particularly the Twins, Vikings, Wild, Spuds, and Gophers.  She was also interested in genealogy, and created extensive binders for both the Wehage and Pfeifer families.  Whenever there were conversations about family happenings, she could always rattle off the exact dates of the occurrences.

Helen is survived by her children David Pfeifer and Marilyn (Michael) Noonan; sister Dorothy Burmeister; brother Robert (Laurie) Wehage; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents Herman (1960) and Pauline (1995), husband Lawrence (2014), and brother Richard (2019).
